Dahlonega Georgia -The first major gold rush in the United States.
Dahlonega was established in 1833. In 1868 gold was discovered that brought people from all over looking for their claim to riches. In Dahlonega the miners brought gold into a federal mint that was set up to coin the gold in the middle of the town square. That became the courthouse and now it is a museum about the gold rush.
The annual festival 'Gold Rush Days' are held when the fall colors are peaking in mid October. Three hundred art and craft exhibitors set up booths in the square for the annual event. The two day event include a parade, children's activities, a fashion show, gold panning contest, wheelbarrow race, King and Queen Coronation, hog calling, buck dancing contest, gospel singing and other live entertainment, wrist wrestling, and delicious food!
